Why is exfoliation important?

There are several reasons why you should become an active scrubber. The skin naturally sheds dead skin cells every day and constantly produces new ones. Sebum is also produced all the time and settles as a film on the surface of the skin. Dirt, grime and pollution from the surroundings will also settle on the skin during the day. Most of us are good at cleansing the face morning and evening, but many of us do not actively use exfoliation as part of the skincare routine.

For the active ingredients in serums and creams to be able to penetrate deeper into the tissue, it is essential that the skin is properly prepped. You can compare it to painting a wall. Would you put new paint straight onto a wall where the old paint is flaking off?

We need to scrub the skin to remove dead skin cells, sebum and dirt, and to prepare the skin for the products we apply afterwards. A scrub can be mechanical or chemical. That is, either with grains, fruit acids or both. Our favourites are Exfoliating Polish and Dual Action Scrub from ZO Skin Health. Exfoliating Polish is a mechanical scrub containing magnesium crystals that gives an effective but gentle peel. Dual Action Scrub is a mechanical and chemical peel that contains coarser grains as well as AHAs. It is often used by patients with acne and oily skin.

We can also carry out chemical peels in the clinic. A chemical peel is a stronger peel containing high concentrations of fruit acids. Under controlled conditions, we etch away the top layer of skin. The skin starts to renew its cells and sheds the old ones. After 5-7 days the skin will be back to normal.
